The Sundial / Die Sonnenuhr

When I went for a walk on a fine day I found this sundial. I hadn’t seen a sundial in ages and I don’t even know if there is any other nearby. I was intrigued by the inscription. I don’t know much Latin, but I know “beatus” is some form of “happy”. So my association was a German saying (Dem Glücklichen schlägt keine Stunde) that means a happy person doesn’t know time. In the meantime I learned the German saying is a quote form one of Schiller’s plays and therefore certainly not of Latin origin.

Of course, I looked up the quote and learned a few things during my research. I’ll tell you about them later.
